Starting off at a new job can be so nerve racking i know on my first day I was so anxious and I just felt something would go wrong I was only used to working with family at my other job but I was worried about working with others and how they would perceive me I don't know why I felt like that I was stupid there was nothing to be afraid of so I'm going to share some tips with you just to make it a lot easier.
When your feeling nervous or anxious take a deep breath and a minute to yourself trust me it helps. Have a positive attitude I know for some people they can find this hard to keep a positive frame of mind but having a positive attitude makes everything so much better you will be able to interact with people and that your eager to learn. Dress to blend in with your co-workers before your starts work try and figure out what you need to wear. Show your team spirt show your co-workers that your willing to work as part of a team and help if I don't have anything to do i would go and ask the others to they need help with anything and people really appreciate it when you offer help and it just makes it easier when working with people. Learn everyone's name quickly for me starting off at my new job I already knew everyone to see and I knew there names because we live in a small town and I know if you live in a bigger town or a city it's not so much easier so try and find out a way to learn them find a little way to suit you for example repeating there name over and over in your head when you first meet them. Ask questions/help this is something I get super anxious about because I'm so quiet I feel like I would be bothering people if I ask them questions or help but really I'm not you can't solve everything on your own and if you ask questions you will learn more and it's also another way to get to know the people you work with better just know they aren't going to bite your head off if you ask them a question or for help. Also by asking questions when your unsure about something will make you feel reassured. Take initiative If you see something that needs to be done go do it if you don't have anything to do go ask others do they need help this shows to your employer that your eager to learn and willing to work. If you need to work later work later or if your employer is short staff and needs someone to come in at the weekend offer to come in they will really appreciate it. It shows your willing to work and that you love your job. Avoid gossip when in a working environment people tend to gossip a lot and I starting off this was something I wasn't used to I'm not like that as a person so I just avoided those kind of conversations I just don't pay any attention to it and not say anything but if it's constant and all the time it can get irritating and it will get to you but you have to show it doesn't get to you. Put your phone away your employer doesn't want to see someone on there phone on Twitter or Facebook they want to see you actually working and doing something if you have nothing to do pick up the broom sweep the floor do something. Your phone is a distraction and not having it out keeps you focused on your job. Show appreciation show appreciation to the people that helped you what I do to show this I would take in a packet of biscuits for our lunch break and share them with everyone it makes people's day and they appreciate small things like that. Keep everything neat and organised I love having things organised when I'm working it just makes everything easier and I think it speeds up your work performance. Keep your boss informed and talk to them it's good to talk to your boss if you have a problem with something but make sure it's a major problem not something small they don't want you running to them every two seconds if something goes wrong and you can always ask your co-workers for help. There is some of my tips when starting a new jobs I hope you find these tips useful and let me know if they worked for you. Until next time -Queen Bee (Laura)
